We at Drone Works like to consider ourselves “Legacy” drone users. We have been building drones since the beginning of the drone. Our first drones were built from parts from scavenged electronics, namely the Nintendo Wii controller. The sensors in the controller were what allowed the first drones to fly.
We have been in the electronics industry since 2000 and have become experts at flying, building, and maintaining drones and extra equipment. This experience is what lead to the Drone Works business.
From Idea to Execution
Sam Smock, Owner or Kansas Drone Works attended school for Kansas State University’s Entrepreneurship. During this time, the Department offered several programs & competitions to students.  The first was “Launch”. This was basically a business pitch contest like TV’s Shark Tank. Contestants were given 90 seconds to pitch their business.  Out of 100 teams, Sam’s Drone Works business pitch was in the top 5.

This lead to the next KSU program, LAB, or Launch a business. 11 “high potential start-ups were selected to participate in the program and compete in the end for cash prizes. This was a multi week long Entrepreneur Bootcamp, teaching many subjects and offering mentoring from area entrepreneurs.  In the end, Sam was chosen in the top two populart vote category.

With the business idea validated repeatedly, Sam started down the road toward what we have today.  We have been operating on word of mouth, operating in what could be called a “soft opening” for quite some time. When it comes to quality, we refuse to sacrifice in order to get our services out to the public faster. We are continually adding equipment and learning new procedures that will allow us to provide a wider range of services to our customer base.

Our fleet consists of Hex, Quad, & Tri-Copters, as well as Flying Wings. Each aircraft provides it’s own function to help us serve you better.
